Content Development Tips

Below is a list of tips that are provided to help you write your web site's content!

Articles
Some good articles to get you started can be found at http://www.useit.com/alertbox/9710a.html and http://websitetips.com/webcontent/. Follow the links from these articles to get a more in depth understanding of the idiosyncrasies of site content.

Search Engines
Writing for web sites requires a knowledge of how search engines will view your site and the types of keywords that your visitors will be using to get to your site. Search engines are looking for content, and so are your visitors. A site visitor is trying to gain an understanding of the types of products/services that you offer, or a visitor is on a quest for knowledge regarding your area of expertise and he's arrived at your site to try to get what he's looking for.

There are certain words that will apply to your company's products/services that people will use when they enter a key phrase or keyword search at Google, Yahoo, or any of the web's list of search engines as the potential site visitor tries to find the type of product that you offer. It is important to research the competition and see how they are writing their web content. Type in some keywords or key phrases that you expect your audience to find you with and take a look at some of the web sites on the first page of results. This should give you an idea of what type of content some of your best competitors are coming up with, which will in turn help you develop your site's content! Use a keyword tool to determine your keyword selection such as the one at Overture. Once you've found some high ranking keywords, make some paragraphs with them and put them on your pages. Localization is a good thing and if you're fortunate enough to have a unique market with little competition, you can get some excellent results.

Useful Content
The most important aspect of your site is that it should be useful to visitors. I have mentioned that your visitors are looking for the types of products/services that you offer, or some expert advice on a matter that you just might be an expert at. Otherwise, they probably wouldn't be visiting your site. Your site should be providing the information that your visitors are looking for, which should also be the information about your products and services and information that you are well qualified to present. Put your own style into it. Don't get too fussy about the search engines. There are some great practical aspects that you should be aware of and apply to your content so that you can get some visitors from them, but the final result really needs your personal touch.

Here's a great example - one of our clients does home inspections and offers his visitors information on problems associated with buying a home as well as steps that should be taken to avoid some potential nightmare problems. This is information that he feels a strong need to provide the public in order that they can be informed to make the best decision that they can on the biggest investment that they will ever make, the purchase of a home. That's good and useful content that might even save a few marriages!

In my line of business, web design, I feel very passionate about my work and I hope that I can relate that. It's a calling for me, something my mental faculties seem to be created for. When I literally stumbled across Macromedia Dreamweaver 2.0 in 1999 on a clone computer that my wife and I bought for a wedding gift (my first computer by the way), I felt like I found a part of me that I had been searching for. I could not stop playing with Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop, even though it literally took a week for me to open up a document in Photoshop. I connected with these programs and it satisfied my need to be creative. From the same sense, you should look at your business in the same way. It can be a God-given thing and something that you totally enjoy. It can also be a ministry to people who need a little guidance if you let it. God uses me almost daily through my business. Relate your calling to others in your own personal way and you will be fulfilling at least some of what you are made for! The web is an excellent place to get your word out, whatever it may be.

Graphics
Graphics can be another unique expression. The cool thing about this is that the modern digital cameras from about the mid-grade point and shoot level and up are excellent for web quality graphics. The best thing that you can do is really try to capture your graphic needs over a period of time. Try different times of day or different rooms, different backgrounds, etc. Also, when taking photographs of people, and you're looking for a certain expression, mood, or that certain smile that you see every day from someone, it's best to take a little time and try several shots over a few days. We also offer photography for your web site, so if you don't have the time to pursue this, we can do it for you.

You can also find images at Istockphoto for dirt cheap if you need a stock photograph. Spend a little time and energy trying to match your companies identity with a certain graphic flare, or your site will end up looking like everyone else's.

Macromedia (Adobe) Contribute
Sneaker Web Design also creates web sites that are updatable through Macromedia Contribute (now Adobe). You can add pictures and text through this program as you need! No more calling your web designer/developer to capitalize your the first letter of the word, "the" in the second paragraph of the main page of the second product section. You can get online through the program and update it yourself, or any content that exists in the main content area for that matter. We will give you some initial training to get you off to a quick start. The program is very intuitive for most people.

Other Content Management Solutions
If your web site is application based, we can make a custom content management solution so that you can update database driven content easily. All of our applications come with a login area that gives our clients access to administrative interfaces that we've created. You can change prices on your products, for example, available sizes, a product name, etc.
